True free range farmers on Kangaroo Island keep only 150 birds per hectare, with the refusal to de-beak their birds. Farmers Graham and Kathy Barrett, of Katham Springs Bio-Dynamic Free Range Eggs want a push for "...tougher regulations to protect hens & new labelling to ensure consumers know what they are buying."

As from the 17th of June in 2013, there has been some success through the South Australian Government defining free-range eggs as less than 1,500 hens per hectare. This will disallow the false claims alleged by some illegitimate free-range operators.

As of early July, our ex-Prime Minister had received a strong public message urging the legislation for a national 'free-range' egg standard. She was delivered some 40, 000 signed petitions, protesting against the industry and state governments' indifference to the continued mislabelling of free range eggs.
Senator Rhiannon put forward the motion for truth in labelling legislations for free range eggs, and while her motion was lost 33 to 11, the pressure is there, and the issue has been made clear to politicians.
Follow the 'Send a Postcard' link on the Take Action page as HSI are still collecting signed postcards for the delivery to our state parliament.
Over ten and a half million are suffering everyday in the chase for greater profits.
Australia has some 10, 5000, 000 hens forced to live in cages smaller than an A4 sheet.
